Evil Ernie: Youth Gone Wild
Published in Paperback by Chaos! Comics Inc. (October, 1997)
Authors: Brian Pulido and Steven Hughes
Average review score:

The Beginning of The End!
Evil Ernie, dubbed as as the most twisted comic book character ever by Fangoria magazine, is the best horror character ever created.

This trade paperback covers the very hard to find, and rather pricey, Youth Gone Wild comic series that came out in 1991. The story is simple: boy gets horribly abused by parents, state and local authorities let bad parents off the hook, boy gets killed in psychiatric home during an experiment to kill his sadistic dreams, boy dies, boy is brought back to life by a beautiful woman who wants him to kill everyone on earth! HA!

In this book, you will meet the Youngs, a family that will stop at nothing to destroy Evil Ernie and save the world from his sadism and his army of zombies, The Fairchilds (Ernie and his family),and the cult icon of terror and beauty (move over Elvira, Morticia,Freddy, Jason, and Mike Myers)Lady Death, who makes a stunning first appearance as the mysterious goddess of the Netherworld who inspires Ernie to kill in her name!

What are you waiting for? Read this book now.
And as Lady Death would say, "Pleasant Nightmares"

It had to start somewhere.
When you ignore a problem, it festers, and can end up biting you in the end, or in this case, kill. It is in b&w and tells the tale of a young man, different from others, who is abused and his cries for help ignored. He lives, dies, comes back with help for a beautiful woman (sigh!) and visits many people with abuse, torture and or course death. It make you want to root for him as he gains a small measure of revenge.

Exploring the Biomedical Revolution
Published in Paperback by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (June, 2000)
Authors: Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Robert A. Potter, and Philip Leder
Average review score:

Absolutely wonderful book!
~This book is very well-written, composed of many short (c. 2 pg) articles on various subjects relating to biology/medicine, such as Sickle Cell disorder and Huntington's Disease. Not only are these articles very informative, they are interesting. ~On top of that, there are some really great pictures, including a pull-out poster of deadly microbes. ~The material covered in this book is fascinating, but it's not something that you think about every day (unless you're a biologist or you're really into biomedicine). It stimulates thought, and brings you to the realization that, yes, this is sort of cool. I was somewhat interested in the broad category of biology and medicine, but when I bought this book, I was affirmed in my belief that biomedicine is a remarkably intriguing field of study. ~I would strongly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in biomedicine. It is a truly amazing book! 5 stars!

Focuses on explanations which are easy to understand
Exploring the Biomedical Revolution examines the work of frontline scientists and how they are changing the face of modern medicine, with chapters presenting articles on research enhanced by vivid color photos. Many titles on biomedicine are inaccessible to lay audiences; not so this book, which focuses on explanations which are easy to understand, yet with plenty of scientific detail added for those involved in health care. Highly recommended.

Family Wealth : Keeping It in the Family
Published in Paperback by Hughes and Whitaker (04 December, 1997)
Author: James E. Hughes
Average review score:

A great addition to my bookshelf
I've read a lot of books and recommended them to my friends and family. This one, I bought for my partners and family. As someone who deals daily with great family wealth, it is invaluable to learn from the experiences of others. There is a wealth of ideas in this book, not just for those with great financial assets, but for those families with great human capital. I would recommend it for anyone who deals with family wealth: attorneys, CPA's, trust officers, and members of families who want to preserve their family wealth (financial, human or intellectual capital).

A New Paradigm For Wealth Preserving
As a great philosopher once said "I am not ashamed to say that I have learned the good news of the truth and am called to proclaim it to others." The truth is Family Wealth: Keeping It In The Family, is the clear result of the author's extensive discernment and constitutes that rare slice of my profession which rises to the level of a ministry. The beauty of this work lies in the author's ability to state concepts with such simplicity and flow, the reader may be lead to conclude "these insights are so patently obvious I should have discovered them myself." Many of us in the estate planning profession, however, have not previously done so. Having invested 20 years in this profession I can attest that many people with reasonable career abilities can accumulate considerable sums of wealth. Moreover, a reasonably competent estate planning attorney can draft the business and estate planning documents to pass that wealth from one generation to the next. Yet after reading Mr. Hughes' book twice (and garnering increasing insights and applications after each journey) it is manifest that merely fulfilling the professional expectations taught in law school will henceforth be insufficient to deal with the interpersonal dynamics and relationship issues which must be addressed in order to wealth preserve. Moreover, this process must be rekindled and nurtured at each generation level. I now understand that to be a truly excellent estate planner, the issues in this book must be addressed by estate planner and client. Your clients need not have the wealth of a Warren Buffett or Bill Gates to benefit from the wisdom of this book and I hope it will raise the standards for the profession as a whole as it did for me.

The Golden Key to Happiness: Words of Guidance and Wisdom
Published in Hardcover by Harper Collins - UK (November, 1995)
Authors: Masami Saionji and Elaine Hughes
Average review score:

over and over and over again
This book goes where I go. It's been to japan and remote parts of the Philippines. It's a small book that travels well, always ready to unload some inspiration. I've bought several copies for good friends. It's not one of those cheesey thought books ... This is some good, strong and direct eastern philosophy. Saionji-san writes in a clear very matter of fact style. Short paragraphs, an easy, yet deep, read. Everytime I pick it up I learn something new from the same words I've read over and over and over again. It's a life changer.

Helpful Personal Guidance by a Spiritual Teacher from Japan
Although I have read quite a few books on New Thought or general Self Improvement over the years, I was very happy to find Masami Saionji's "Golden Key to Happiness" and the wonderfully helpful gems of wisdom collected in that small volume. As an example, in the chapter called "Between Parents and Children," I found the following message: "You were given a precious life in this world, with ties with your parents, brothers and sisters...You will never again be born in the same environment. The same family construction will never again be repeated. As long as you are given, in this life, this environment and these human relationships, it's important to wholeheartedly value them." As my own relationship with my siblings had not been as satisfactory as it could be, one of the factors being my degree of appreciating them, this particular point of view struck home and really moved me to a much better way of treating them and giving them my love and appreciation. It was an eye-opener for me. And there are many more such sentences in the book.

Great Gylphs Around the Year
Published in Paperback by Scholastic Professional Books (July, 2001)
Authors: Honi Bamberger and Patricia Hughes
Average review score:

Great Ideas!
As usual, Honi Bamberger has written an extremely teacher-friendly book. If you are new to the idea of "glyphs" this is the ideal book. Patterns are provided for each glyph, as well as a legend, so that you don't have to construct your own. There is a glyph featured for every month of the year, plus a few extras. Students love this type of data collection, a welcome change from traditional "graphing" activities. These are also very easy to level, depending on the age of your students or how much guidance they require. It's a nice cross-curricular activity as well, integrating math and art. I can't wait for the next installment!

outstanding
I have been to a professional development class hosted by Dr. Honi B. (co-author of book) She is an outstanding person and teacher. These glyphs are not just art projects. The glyphs are representations of the children. When completed so much math and language rich vocabulary are going on you don't think you are teaching when you are. Glyphs symbols can be altered to suit your students (fish=boy snail=girl)...buy any books by Dr. Honi B.

Healthy Computing With Muscle Biofeedback
Published in Paperback by Biofeedback Foundation of Europe (15 January, 2000)
Authors: Erik Peper and Katherine Hughes Gibney
Average review score:

Excellent Resource
This is a great source of information on how to use surface EMG to learn how to minimize the risk of repetitive strain injuries while using the computer.

There are very few practical books on the use of biofeedback and this is one of the best. The first author, Erik Peper is a past president of the Biofeedback Society of America, and has decades of experience in teaching biofeedback, both to practitioners and to students at San Francisco State University, where he is a professor. He knows how to really teach in a practicaly, helpful way.

The book is well laid out, with exercises and plenty of illustrations. It is a useful manual both for interested layman and practitioners who want to work with clients who use computers.

The appendix includes additional info on breath training, RSI assessment and prevention and quantitiative protols for assessment and treatment using EMG.

Mind Over Matter
As I write this on my laptop, I am mindful of tips I learned from this book to prevent the effects of unhealthy body mechanics while working on computers. Pepper and Gibney have managed to take a technical subject and make it easy to understand. The strategies to combat repetitive strain injuries are explained well and easy to apply. Nearly every chapter includes pictures and graphs to really help to illustrate what they are describing. The six appendices contain well referenced sEMG newsletters and other valuable tips on healthy computing. This is a resource that should be read by every doctor that sees computer related conditions as well as every company that puts there employees behind computers. Being proactive with this technology can help prevent many disabling and expensive stress injuries at work.

Hearts of the Children: The Writing on the Wall (Hearts of the Children, 1)

Children of the promise series
Our family read this series. We thoroughly enoyed this series.
I felt like the author took us in with the family and we became apart of their family. It was like being with them when Bro. Thomas had to let his children grow up and make their mistakes.
We hurt for them when they hurt. When they were seperated by war and his mission. Gene's captivity in the war and all he went through. To find out he was still alive was such a relief.
I was so excited to find out Mr. Hughes started his new series.
I just ordered Vol. #1 today. I can't wait for it to arrive.

I Loved This Book
I loved this book! The charactors seem so real, and I learned a bunch of stuff about the 60's I didn't know before. If you like historical fiction, romance, and action, this is the book for you. I would recomend it to any teen looking for a good book.

Great Story
This was one of the best books I've ever read....I heard stories about Oklahoma through my great grandma, and my grandma, but this book just validates those stories...and for a real treat I recommend the sequel to this book "Sons of Thunder".

It Deserved More Than 5 Stars!
I thought this book was more than excellent. I don't read much but this book was one that I could not put down until I finished it. I think it would make a great movie script! If you want to relive the Great Depression Era through a small boy's eyes you need to read this one. The author, Bonnie S. Speer, knows how to write. I have read other books she's written.
